Creating a VR training simulator for equipment tagging/lockout procedures
Virtual simulation allows employees to master critical energy isolation skills in a safe environment, practice precise actions, and gain a better understanding of the company's risk system. Employees rehearse all scenarios in advance using a prepared model of the plant's operations.
This not only minimizes human error but also promotes the implementation of international safety standards, strengthening the company's reputation as an innovative and responsible employer.
We created a virtual representation of the plant based on references from the actual facility. Together with the company's engineers, we formulated a model of its systems' operation in virtual reality.
In the simulation, the employee must physically isolate hazardous electrical and hydraulic energy in the relevant equipment using tools.
Client
Client: Сhemical plant.
Product
The objective is to educate plant personnel on lockout/tagout procedures through virtual reality technology. Create a realistic VR simulator to facilitate effective training on lockout/tagout practices during maintenance activities.
Task
We created a VR training simulator that replicates the lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure. Users are required to disconnect equipment from all energy sources and ensure that this isolation is maintained throughout the maintenance process.
Stages
1. Design and approval of the scenario and visual concept (3 days)
2. Prototyping the scenario and developing simulator mechanics (2 weeks)
3. Creation of the environment, including UI and 3D assets (2 weeks, concurrent with scenario prototyping)
4. Integration of client feedback and final product development (1 week)
5. Testing and revisions (2 weeks)
Result
The VR simulator enables employees to conduct periodic performance evaluations in a virtual environment, offering a thorough assessment of their skills. It can create complex systems with detailed interdependencies, facilitating objective evaluation of advanced problem-solving abilities. Employees have the opportunity to practice procedures on a digital model prior to executing real-world tasks.
